Hello there! I’m Brent and I wear many hats. Most importantly, I’m husband to Rebekah and father of our 4 daughters & 2 sons.
I've been a Software Engineer since 2014. After graduating with a B.S. in Computer Science, I spent over 4 years at Igniter Media building an online marketplace for videos and graphics that serve churches.
After our third daughter was born in 2019, we decided to move closer to family, which led me to search for a remote role. That same year I was honored to join TaxJar, a company that had been fully remote since the start. In 2021, TaxJar was acquired Stripe, where I spent 3.5 years before being laid off in January 2025.
While working at Igniter & TaxJar, my primary focus was in Ruby on Rails, working with various flavors of SQL, with Sidekiq for background jobs, and with some limited exposure to React & Vue.
After joining Stripe, I worked mostly Ruby (with typing via Sorbet) and MongoDB.
In our free time, my family & I enjoy hiking in nature, traveling, and have recently started raising some of our own food, and hope to some day turn this into a business. We tend to a host of Meishan pigs, ducks, turkeys, geese, and more chickens than I can count. The Meishan are a rare heritage breed that, until 2024, were classified as critically endangered by the livestock conservancy. They also produce what many consider to be one of the highest quality porks available. We're exploring ways to help repopulate this rare breed while also building it into a family business, and providing food for our table.
I originally started this blog to post my favorite family discipleship resources for friends at church, and also to share my thoughts on raising kids, homeschooling, classical education, etc. While I will continue to post on these subjects as ideas come to me, my current focus is finding another job, and (hopefully) starting our own business while I'm searching. I plan to spend time writing about this journey. If any of that interests you, I'd love for you to follow along.
Thanks for stopping by! God bless!
